Phil Pover - STW Training Hub Paramedic Facilitator

Phil PoverFollowing a profession in aerospace engineering and qualifying as an electrical and electronic engineer, Philip had a complete change of heart and embarked on a career in the Ambulance service. Joining Greater Manchester Service in 1995, as an ambulance technician and qualifying as a paramedic 2 years later. Phil has also worked in Shropshire and Mid-Wales as a Paramedic. In his ambulance career Phil has worked on front line ambulances, rapid response vehicles and spent 5 years working on the mid-Wales air-ambulance. As well as working clinically in the emergency setting Phil held a variety of training and management role.

In order to progress Phil graduated from Swansea university with a first class honours degree and has since completed a PGCE and then an MSc in advanced clinical practice.

More recently Phil moved from emergency care, first into out-of-hours care and then primary care where he still works clinically. In his new role as First Contact Practitioner (FCP) facilitator, Phil hopes to act as an ambassador for Paramedics seeking to utilise their; knowledge, skills and experience in the different setting of primary care. As Phil knows the challenges faced by individuals transferring to this new role he feels well placed to support the Paramedics in practice, as well as the PCN teams, as they complete the FCP (or Advanced Practitioner; AP) Paramedic portfolio. By establishing FCP’s and AP’s in all PCN’s in STW Philip’s ambition is to increase the number of Paramedics, in primary care, who are supported and registered with Health Education England (HEE).

Away from work Phil likes to watch Cricket and Rugby League, lamenting the fact that his playing days are long over. Phil now settles for long walks in the beautiful Shropshire / Wales borders, enjoys cooking and would like to travel more.
