Skilled Worker Visas (Tier 2)

This page provides information on the Skilled Worker Visa scheme and is intended for both IMG doctors who are on these visas, and for practices that are interested in being able to employ clinicians on visas.

For IMGs on Skilled Worker Visas

If you are an IMG doctor on the STW VTS and are currently working under a Skilled Worker Visa, you will need to ensure that your post-CCT plans are in place.

If you wish to work in STW as a qualified GP you will need to work for a sponsoring employer. Prior to the Autumn of 2023 newly-qualified GPs in this position had to find such employment straight away – from now on they will have their visa extended by 4 months by the Home Office. This will allow the GP to find a job with a sponsoring practice, or for their new employing practice to apply for a sponsorship licence if they don't already have one. The position in STW is as follows:

  • Many of our practices with Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin are sponsoring practices – you can find out which ones by clicking here, or by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Most GP vacancies are advertised on the STW Training Hub website, and we encourage practices to state whether they are a sponsoring employer on job adverts
  • We have recruited an Ethnically Diverse GP Champion: Dr Gideon Eyitemi (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) . You can view further information on Dr Eyitemi and his role as Ethnically Diverse GP Champion by clicking here
  • Part of Dr Eyitemi’s role is to assist IMG doctors with the process of transition from the VTS to the post-CCT world
  • Fees and costs payable by Skilled Worker Visa holders can be reimbursed by NHSE/I via the GP’s employing practice
  • Shropdoc is a sponsoring employer and can offer portfolio careers in urgent primary care for local GPs who are on a skilled worker visa. Contact Simon Chapple This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information on this.
