Pharmacy Technician
Primary Care Pharmacy Technicians are registered healthcare professionals with the GPhC. They work alongside multi-disciplinary teams within general practice and Primary Care Networks (PCN).
They contribute to improving prescribing practice and patient care and support the delivery of the Directed Enhanced Service PCN prescribing agenda working alongside Primary Care Pharmacists. This includes improving repeat prescribing processes in General Practices within the PCN, promoting digitalisation, reducing medicines waste and minimising clinical risk associated with medicines taking.
Their role involves helping patients to get the best from their medicines, whilst operating within clear protocols and following national and local guidance. They are responsible for encouraging the development of better understanding of the principles of medicines optimisation throughout the practice and PCN teams and promoting good practice in line with therapeutic developments.
Career Pathway
All Pharmacy Technicians employed through the primary care Network Contract Directed Enhanced Service will join the CPPE Primary Care Pharmacy Education pathway, unless they have already completed the Medicines Optimisation in Care Homes (MOCH) pathway.
Salary is usually dependent on experience with newly qualified Pharmacy Technicians earning £22,500-£24,500 (Band 4) increasing to £24,500-£30,000 (Band5) with experience. Senior Pharmacy Technicians with management, training and leadership skills may earn upwards of this.
