About the course
STWTH works closely with a number of universities to facilitate enrolment of STW clinicians onto this module. Over the last few years STWTH has supported a significant number of primary care staff to upskill to become Prescribers. If you are at the stage of wanting to advance your practice this is your next step! The aim of the award is to enable students to achieve the professional NMC (2018) / HCPC (2019) / RPS (2016) prescribing standards and competencies underpinned by clinician subject knowledge and skills.
There are usually two intakes per annum for this course in January and September. Duration around 6 months.
Course content
- Assess and consult with patients/clients, clients, parents and carers and consider options
- Undertake a thorough history, including medication history and current medication to inform diagnosis, clinical assessment in the context of the legal, cognitive emotional and physical differences between children and adults
- Understand and apply the relevant legislation to the practice of nurse/authorised HCPC registrant in order to prescribe safely
- Critically appraise, use sources of information, advice and decision support systems in prescribing practice
- Analyse the influences that can affect prescribing practice, and gain an understanding by managing prescribing practice in an ethical way
- Understand and apply knowledge of drug actions in prescribing practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of the roles and relationships of others involved in prescribing, supplying and administering medicines.
- Prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively
- Practice within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility
- Develop a clinical management plan within legislative requirements.
Entry Requirements
- You must have been registered with an appropriate professional regulatory body e.g. NMC or HCPC for a minimum of one year prior to application for entry onto the programme.
- You need to have undertaken a health assessment module or have confirmation from your employer that you are competent in clinical/health assessment, diagnostics/care management, planning and evaluation of care.
- You will require a practice assessor who is a registered health professional and an experienced prescriber with suitable equivalent qualifications for the programme who is willing to mentor and assess you for 90 hours of prescribing practice.
- You need to provide evidence of degree level study.
- You will need the support of your employer/manager and prescribing lead to confirm that your service is one that will be enhanced if you are able to prescribe.
