Ethnically Diverse GP Champion
Dr Gideon Eyitemi ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )
Gideon will mainly be working with the significant number of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are on our GP Vocational Training Scheme (VTS) – focusing on providing practical advice on all aspects of working and living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin as a GP. He will also be providing support to ethnically diverse qualified GPs.
“I'm Gideon, new appointed Ethnically Diverse GP Champion. There is a growing diversity among Shropshire NHS staff. As a newly qualified GP who has come in from Nigeria, trained in the Shropshire VTS and settled here, I plan to support the GPs and GP trainees in the Shropshire VTS in settling in Shropshire, help navigate possible challenges they might be facing at work and in the community as much as possible with the overall purpose of retaining GPs from minority ethnic groups in Shropshire.”
Sponsoring Practices for Skilled Visa Holders
In order to continue to work and live in the UK following CCT a GP (or other clinician) on a Skilled Worker Visa needs to find employment with a Sponsoring Employer. Prior to the Autumn of 2023 newly-qualified GPs in this position had to find such employment straight away – from now on they will have their visa extended by 4 months by the Home Office. This will allow the GP to find a job with a sponsoring practice, or for their new employing practice to apply for a sponsorship licence if they don't already have one.
