First Contact Practitioner Masters Module

About the course

This 40-credit Masters module will develop professional, clinical and leadership skills to enable Allied Health Professionals to design, implement and deliver patient care at the first point of contact in primary care.

This module has been developed in collaboration with Health Education England at the conception of First Contact Practice.

The module aligns with Stage 1 and Stage 2 detailed in the ‘Roadmaps to Practice’ published by Health Education England. On completion you will be eligible to register with the Centre for Advancing Practice as a First Contact Practitioner.

The module will be delivered online. The virtual learning environment will include a variety of platforms and approaches to facilitate student engagement and learning.

Course content

There will be a focus on the development of clinical and leadership skills to support the management of patients with undifferentiated diagnosis, as well as effective service redesign, delivery, and evaluation.  The content is based on the following themes:

  • The Primary Care landscape
  • Patient presentation at the first point of contact: Diagnostic uncertainty and serious pathology
  • Patient management at the first point of contact: Refer, test or treat
  • Public health and primary care: Influencing and improving the individual and community's health
  • Professional and service development in a changing landscape.

Entry requirements

All Allied Health Professionals must have 5 years of post-registration experience. 

Physiotherapists must have 5 years of post-registration experience with 3 years of musculoskeletal specific clinical experience.

A suitable clinical mentor must be identified prior to enrolment. The Clinical Mentor should be a registered medical practitioner or Advanced Clinical Practitioner (with at least 3 years’ experience in their role) and have clinical responsibilities within primary care.
