Who should attend

Health Care Assistants working within General Practice whose role will include delivery of immunisations to specific patient groups.

What will I learn

The course curriculum of this two-day training course reflects the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers (2015) which recommended that only Health Care Assistants (HCAs) who have achieved education and training to level three of the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) or equivalent in England and Wales, with at least 2 years’ experience as a HCA should be considered for training in vaccine administration.

Course Content

In order to support Health Care Assistants in developing the required theoretical knowledge and skills, and demonstrate the competence, evidence-based knowledge and understanding of all aspects of immunisation, the programme requires the support of a practice-based registered nurse mentor who is trained in all aspects of immunisation. This course includes both theoretical & work-based practical assessment.

The course will include:

  • Review all current immunisation programmes
  • Focus on vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to practice and their associated complications
  • Discuss how the body responds to influenza, shingles and pneumococcal vaccines
  • Explore the different types of vaccines available, what they contain and any related pre-cautions and / or contraindications, including adverse reactions and the recognition and management of anaphylaxis
  • Review how vaccines should be stored, handled and transported
  • Discuss legal issues, prescribing guidance and documentation
  • Practise injection technique
  • Explore strategies to raise the profile of immunisation and increase vaccine uptake
  • Ultimately develop clinicians from novice to expert within their scope of competence

This course is fully funded by Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Training Hub.
